parenting ups and downs and inbetweens II

ups.

1. letter sounds. now that atticus knows his letters, he decided to learn all the sounds they make. he walks around seeing letters and then saying, "V! vaaa, vaaa, vaaa" any ideas for fun toddler learn-to-read methods?

2. words. atticus is repeating everything. it's amazing to hear him use a word we just told him only the day before. we've been having a lot of watermelon lately and last week i told him it was juicy. this morning i was slicing some up to give him in a bowl, and he said "juicy!" while squeezing it on to the kitchen floor. another day, i was ranting about sweeping the kitchen floor and said something like, "this floor is making me crazy!" to which goo repeated, "crazy! crazy! crazy!"

downs.

1. bedtime. i really thought we had mastered the night night routine of mr. tooth brush, big night night diap, jammies (goo says jammies in a british accent), songs and milkies. for the past couple of weeks, mr. goo pitches a big old fit unless i put him to bed. and then even if i do the whole routine, when i go to lay him down, it's all, "sit, sit, sit, chimney (this means sing somewhere over the rainbow), sit, sit, sit, chimney!" then when i finally lay him down, he cries and screams no. please tell me this is a phase.

2. restaurants. going out to restaurants is pretty much over. i thought the fact that we try to eat 80 percent of our meals at the table, with atticus in his own seat was a good start. and that we were even helping out our rare restaurant cause. yeah, not so much. atticus wants to sit on my lap and is happy for about fifteen minutes. which means his head explodes with boredom and irritation as soon as the waitress sets down our fajitas. who can blame the kid? los tios is beyond colorful, full of loud people, music and silverware you can impale yourself with. beyond that, there are two parks across the street.

inbetweens.

1. manipulation. so far this is in the inbetween category because i have decided to find it amusing. for this week. a few nights ago, i was putting atticus to bed when i heard a few toots. he promptly told me, "toots!" and giggled. well then i said, "oh atticus! stinky! did you poo?" side note, i have a mom fear of unknowingly putting him to bed with a poo diaper that he sits in all night. anyway, so i got up, turned on the light, checked his buns and gave it the all clear. well every night since, there are toots, followed by "change? diap. stinky!" and waving his hand in front of his face. sigh.
