kale chips

on sunday we made our pilgrimage to MoM's.
note: my organic market is a lot like whole foods but without the insane prices, massive amounts of people, overstocked produce and tempting hot bar.
so there i was at MoM's,
surrounded by lovely but smartly-stocked produce,
and i bought my first bundle of kale.

i knew i wouldn't be choking the kale down on it's own.
no, no, no.
for my virginal kale experience it would have to be the blog-obsessed loved kale chips.
you should read how people go on and on about these kale chips.
come on, is there any way these are better than avocado fries?
puh-lease.
they've even been compared to kettle chips in addiction and taste.
meh i said.

as far as the avocado comparison, the only likiness i see is the bright green color.
the similarities pretty much end there.
and between kale and kettle chips?
um, i see no similarities.

except that they both begin with the letter k.
i supposes.

still i am not a quitter.
i bought kale and i was going to make kale.
never mind the funky sock smell.
i munched on some rye crisps and  olive hummus to cheer myself up and pressed on.
thinking these kale chips will certainly be a bust.

kale is leafy, rough, curly and as i stated, it sort of smells.
intrigued yet?

it's also insanely good for you.
yeah, yeah, yeah.
the nutrient factor kept pounding my brain.
and the kettle chips comparison.
of course.

so i chopped up half a bunch of kale.
leaving the stalks to mock me.
i tossed them with some olive oil and salt
and threw them in the oven.

twenty minutes later some crispy, still green and not smelly "chips" emerged from my oven.

i braced myself for the worst.

but was pleasantly surprised by the light, crunchy texture.
as well as the salty and non-smelly taste.
one kale chip of course became the entire plate of kale chips.
they were rather addictive.
as addictive as kettle chips or avocado fries?
um, no.
but still, a healthy snack when you're feeling rather defensive about your derriere.
just saying, it happens.
and the kale chips are even better dipped into some bbq sauce, greek yogurt or hummus.
when in doubt, dip!
