smoothie.

friday proved to be a rather unusual day. i actually got an early start and then drove to emmitsburg to see my brother alec at college to visit and have lunch. alec's been at school about a month and it's been very unusual to not see him and to even more unusual to see him living in a different environment. but our visit was every bit as usual as our time together always is, we ate something greasy (insert chinese here), quoted stupid and innane movies (insert blades of glory and anchorman here) and alec told priceless stories about school. i drove home in the rain with a smile of relief that we were still us.

what was also usual about friday, and what's usual about every day for me, is that i needed something sweet come midafternoon. i was watching giada make some "smoothie" with gelato, fruit and cookies when i realized i had similiar yet healthier ingredients around to make a smoothie probably closer to the actual definition.

first i added 1/2 cup of frozen black raspberries and a 6oz container of blueberry greek yogurt to my trusty blender.

then i added about a 1/4 teaspoon each of cinnamon, nutmeg and almond extract.

however when i tried to blend these ingredients the blades just sort of spun but nothing blended, so i added about a cup of ice and 1/3 cup of skim milk which seemed to get the rest of the ingredients moving.
once the ingredients were blended, i poured into my favorite cocktail glass and added about 1/3 cup of kashi go lean crunch.

the color alone is pretty gorgegous and the kashi added just the right amount of crunch. i 'm thinking of making this as dessert next time we have people over. i'll probably only give them about half this serving though, after all not everyone has my wicked sweet tooth.
